Who We Are

South Georgia Bank was originally chartered in 1987 as South Georgia Federal Savings Bank.

The vision of the Board of Directors was to establish and institution that specialized primarily in home mortgages and consumer lending in Tattnall, Evans, and Long Counties. The original office was opened in April, 1987 at its current location on South Veterans Boulevard in Glennville. To more effectively meet the needs of a growing customer base, the Bank enlarged and renovated the original structure in 1992. Since its inception, the Bank has undergone two name changes.

In 1994, the name changed to South Georgia Federal Savings Bank, FSB and in 1997, the current name, South Georgia was adopted. In order to more effectively serve an expanding market and customer base, South Georgia Bank changed its regulatory charter in 2001 from a Federal Savings Bank to a state chartered Commercial Bank. This change enabled the Bank to significantly expand its lending capacity in the areas of commerce, agriculture and real estate.

Our customer base continues to grow and the Bank constantly strives to expand its portfolio of loan and deposit products to serve the needs in an ever changing market.

In response to an expanding customer base, the Bank established a second location in Claxton, Georgia in 1995. A third location was established in Reidsville, Georgia in 2002 followed by a fourth location in Hinesville, Georgia in 2008. In 2025, the Bank further expanded by opening its fifth branch in Augusta, Georgia.

Now in our fourth decade, South Georgia Bank has been a proven market leader in customer service, providing the latest in both technology platforms and product offerings. Our goal is to be more than a bank, endeavoring instead to be a partner in helping customers get the most from their banking needs. Our mission statement of “offering banking services that exceed the expectations of our customers, shareholders and employees” is more than a slogan. It is indeed a belief that we strive to make a reality daily in the lives of our customers and the communities we serve.
